Kumbirai Kangai was born on 17 February 1938.  His parents were peasant farmers in Buhera in the Charter District in the south-east of Zimbabwe.

He was educated at Makumbe Mission School in Buhera, Zimuto Secondary School in Fort Victoria (Masvingo) (now Masvingo) and at United Teachers Training College, Umtali (Mutare) (now Mutare) .

He went to San Mateo College and the University of California where he qualified in Public Health and Clinical Laboratory Pathology in 1972

He joined the struggle full time in 1973, in Lusaka and Mozambique. 

Detained in Zambia in March 1975. Released on 16 October 1976.

He returned to fight and win his seat in the Manicaland constituency in 1980.  He was appointed to a cabinet post as Minister of Labour and Social Welfare in the Zimbabwe Government in March 1980.
